New Shingles Vaccine Available

As of January 2018, a new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, is now available in Canada. It can be given to individuals over the age of 50 and is a 2 dose vaccine, given 2-6 months apart. Unfortunately it is not covered by OHIP but is covered by many private insurance plans and is available by prescription from your doctor. Based on studies, Shingrix is more effective at preventing shingles than Zostavax, which was previously the only shingles vaccine available. Zostavax continues to be covered by OHIP for individuals age 65-70. Speak to your doctor or our nurse Christy to find out more.
